Tips & Tricks to Score High in IELTS

IELTS Listening Tips (30 minutes + 10 mins transfer)

  • Practice with Multiple Accents: 70% of the test uses UK accents, but US, Australian, and Canadian accents also appear. Watch BBC News, TED Talks, NPR podcasts, and English movies to train your ear.
  • Use CAPITAL LETTERS: Always transfer answers in capital letters to avoid handwriting errors.
  • Follow Word Limits: “No more than two words” means exactly two words. Extra words = wrong answer.
  • Predict the Answer Type: Numbers, names, years, and addresses are common in fill-in-the-blank questions.
  • Hyphenated Words Count as One: (e.g., short-sighted = one word).
  • Don’t Panic if You Miss an Answer: Move on quickly and focus on the next.
  • Underline Keywords in Questions: Helps you stay focused during recordings.
  • Time Management: Use the last 10 minutes wisely to transfer answers.

IELTS Reading Tips (60 minutes, 3 passages, 40 questions)

  • Allocate Time Properly: Spend 17 minutes per passage, leaving extra minutes for review.
  • Skim & Scan Technique: Skim for main ideas, scan for keywords and synonyms.
  • Focus on Headings & First Sentences: They usually hold the main idea of each paragraph.
  • Answer in Order: Most answers follow the passage sequence (except headings).
  • Practice with Cambridge IELTS Books: They are the closest to the real exam.
  • Watch Out for True/False/Not Given: “Not Given” means the statement isn’t mentioned at all.
  • Paraphrasing Awareness: Questions rarely copy text directly, so build a strong vocabulary bank.
  • Don’t Overthink: If confused, make an educated guess instead of wasting time.

IELTS Writing Tips (60 minutes – Task 1: 150 words, Task 2: 250 words)

  • Task 1:
    • Academic: Analyze graphs, charts, tables, maps.
    • General: Write a formal, semi-formal, or informal letter.
  • Task 2: Argumentative, Problem-Solution, Opinion, or Discussion essay.
  • Time Management: Spend 20 mins on Task 1, 40 mins on Task 2 (since Task 2 has double weightage).
  • Structure Matters:
    • Intro → Body 1 → Body 2 → Conclusion.
    • Use connectors (In contrast, Moreover, Therefore, As a result).
  • Vocabulary Variety: Replace simple words with advanced synonyms:
    • “Increase” → surge, climb, soar.
    • “Decrease” → plummet, drop, decline.
  • Proofreading: Save 3–4 minutes to check grammar, spelling, and word count.
  • Word Count Range: Stick to 150–180 (Task 1) & 250–270 (Task 2). Too short = penalty.
  • Stay Formal: Avoid contractions and casual language in Academic tasks.

IELTS Speaking Tips (11–14 minutes)

  • Part 1: Be short and natural – don’t memorize answers.
  • Part 2 (Cue Card): Use PEEC (Point → Elaborate → Example → Close).
  • Part 3: Give deeper, analytical answers.
  • Confidence Over Grammar: It’s better to speak fluently with small errors than pause too much.
  • Mirror Practice: Speak daily in front of a mirror to improve fluency.
  • Use Idioms & Phrasal Verbs: “On cloud nine”, “The ball is in my court”, “Pull out all the stops”.
  • Connectors for Fluency: Moreover, However, In addition, On the other hand, As a result.
  • Expand Vocabulary: Learn topic-specific words (education, technology, environment).
  • Record Yourself: Helps track fluency, pronunciation, and coherence.
